Absolutely amazing game, excited to play more levels when they are out :) are you planning to add harder difficulties at any point? Would love an excuse to replay the levels already out

Love the work you're doing, if you need any help with sprites/art work let me know I can lend my hand. Cheers!

Hey Sofa. How can we support you?? I know there's a few other souls out there that would love to support the continuation of this

I second this!

this is one of the coolest projects I’ve seen in a long time. Is there a plan to complete the whole game? Great work, hopefully this opens the door for other projects of this caliber

Really wonderful, quite well done. The new Warthog and sniping game play is a really clever way to evoke the moments of the original while translating them to GBC in a way that is actually fun. Those jumps over the river are iconic. Great work!!

OMG <3

I hope you add the trigger buttons of the game boy eventually so we could potentially have grenades be the left trigger and A or B be a gun bash or there's other cool mechanics you could add doing that.

If you add a bash the simplest way would probably be putting a sprite animation over chief corresponding with his direction that shows a little arm movement with a slash like animation would be pretty cool

Thanks for playing! I did want to add a melee, and it would be easy to implement, but there just aren't enough buttons. The Game Boy Color doesn't have trigger buttons, so I can't map to those. Additionally, while each mechanic is easy to implement in a vacuum, its adding everything together cumulatively that can have an impact on performance. I had to think critically about which mechanics to cut in order to preserve smooth gameplay within the limits of the GBC.

I think the project is pretty cool and I hope you are getting a lot of love from the community! You're right the game boy color does not have enough buttons, but maybe this project has potential being turned into gba advanced game one day and be able to handle more ideas you get. But I'm just a fan who doesn't know how that coding works tbh

Amazing work!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.

This is really impressive! Keep up the great work!

Thanks for playing!

This is Halo for GBC!

Nice project!

Amazing to see this!!  The art, music and gameplay all together! Halo <3

Good work! Despite the limitations of the tech being used you still get a great feel of the original material.

That is a great compliment! Thanks for playing :)

Incredible! Where can we follow you for updates?

Either here or on the GB Studio discord channel are the best places!

I have been falling in love with both Halo and old handheld games recently, and this is amazing. I can't wait for more levels to come out and eventually complete the campaign story, I'd love to have a mini-Halo to play when I can't use my PC. I'm sharing this gem.

It doesnt work after loading main menu. Clicking on player dont do anything, i can only change selected option in main menu and nothing else. I tryed pressing every button and it just dont work

(+1)

Been telling everyone about this! Played through the game the other day. That little sniper mini-game was very creative! Can't wait to see the rest of the project when its ready.

Really cool! Just completed both levels on my GBC. Was very faithful to the original, and ran perfectly. I could image the original game the whole time wherever I was. Hope you can add some more music, as cool as the Halo theme is, it got a bit repetitive. Also some more weapons, maybe plasma pistol (charging) or needler (homing) as timed power ups dropped from kills could work on Gameboy mechanics? And nades of course! But great job!

Also, I am sad there wasn't the Cortana dialouge for this line in the first level

I really love your work here, I'm looking forward to playing through this when its finished!

so glad to be playing games like this. I never had the game boy color, but did have the big grey block game boy and it was always a blast to play.

Hey, so not sure if bug or not but i finish the second mission and cannot enter the mission where you rescue Keyes. It just boots me back to the main menu no matter what i do. I love this game and was hoping it was fisnihed? Maybe not??

Ok... I downloaded SameBoy and it's not working on it.. the menu is there and everything... :(

Works fine on Pizza Boy C Pro that im using probably on the free version too

This is so fun!!! <3

what the best emulator core from retroarch to pair with this? or what emulator is being used in the browser?

I use Sameboy, but I think any reputable emulator should work!

I always use mgba core for all my Gb and gbc since it's one of the few that supports Super gameboy even tho this games doesn't require it. Works fine on It right now that I tested before writing this. Best emulator by far from my experience is Pizza Boy pro by far. Only con for it is the super game boy in it can't seem to get it to work but custom box art and custom borders is something that not many other can't do especially not with a one click and customization pizzaboy pro has since its a one and done plus reliable Achievements something retroarch also has trouble since like me have to log in every single time I open retroarch which I don't for pizza now pro

any chance we will see some cover art in screenscraper or the gamesdb for emulation station?

If it works like pizza boy were u can add the art easy with a click i can make one for this if enough people ask for it and the Sofaswordsman appoves it since its his game

Is it just me or the game doesn't work? I'm hitting enter to start the game but nothing is happening.

You have to click on the emulator player for the key bindings to work. IDK why, but it's like that for all games on Itch that you can play in the browser.

(1 edit)

Why is it not letting me play? I go load it in and then press the start game, but when I try to press campaign, missions or continue it does nothing. On both the website and downloaded versions.

I'm not sure what you're up against with the downloaded file though. I just downloaded it to test, and it worked fine for me in Sameboy.

Is it computer specific like lots of video games? It's still not working.

Honestly made me think of the days I used to have a gameboy advanced. A lot of nostalgia is couped up in this game.

Is it possible to play this on Game Boy emulator instead?

(+2)

Yep! Just download the .gb rom and play it on your emulator of choice.

Great! Thanks.

Initially, I thought this project was a demo of just the first level. But thanks to xXBarthXx, it seems like this game is getting traction to continue.

With the Halo community in dire straits at the moment. This game really ignited a dimming spark in my heart. I would like to contribute or help crowdfund the remaining 8 levels of Halo: Combat Evolved for Devolved.

The talent on display here from someone who truly cares for the source material is speaking volumes.

TONS of people seem to be enjoying the video I put out yesterday showcasing the second level. Hope you get around to releasing more soon!

Game is great! Super in depth and faithful to the original. I even tried to do the "Megg" Easter Egg, and it kind of worked. I could kill Captain Keyes. The Invincible Marine did spawn. I don't think the easter egg is in here, seeing as there's no door. But what did happen is that I was able to walk through the wall in front of Keyes, even before killing him, and after evading the Invincible Marine, I got stuck in a loop of Chief walking off the side of the screen and reappearing on the other side without touching the controls. Not complaining to be clear, it was cool I was able to get that far in the first place. Can't wait for more!

AMAZING! and this comes from one who's never been much of a fan of top-down shooter games. this is great. so much time and effort was clearly put into this.

Had to create an Itch account so I could comment on how amazing this is. The attention to detail is top notch. Can tell it's a labor of love. So excited to see the full game completed eventually.

I have been wanting to get back to this for a long time, but with a couple games I had lined up and life happening beyond my channel, I only recently have got the chance to get to it. But I am so glad I did! I thought the first level was an awesome experience, but playing level 2 brought on so much more! I know I said it before, but SofaSwordsman, you have put so much love into this game to make it a beautiful recreation, and I can't wait to see what else you have in store for it! I love how you implemented the sniper rifle, not quite what I was expecting, but with limited control inputs, I love the shooting gallery feel to it!

(Also, not sure if it's an Easter egg or random chance, but I managed to get the Grunt Birthday Party Skull effect when I had to replay some of the first level, very nice addition!)

Thank you for your amazing comment! It means a lot to me! For the grunt birthday party, I actually had that in the game with the confetti and everything, but ended up cutting it because it was taking up too many tiles. That one death sound was accidentally left in :) Maybe I'll be able to add back the full effect some day.

I think it'd be an awesome addition! I heard the sound but didn't see anything happen, so it threw me off for a second, lol. Hopefully you can figure out how to make it work,  it'd make a great Easter egg! Can't wait for the rest of the game or the next level to be announced!

Make an ost link PLEASE it's demade so well!

As a Fan of Halo and gaming. I love what you have done with rhis game. Its so fun just hopefully the end version has a difficulty option to make it harder were elites have rechargeable shields just like the player and Assault Rifle or both weapons have ammo you have to pick up for more etc. As is its extreme fun and true to the actual game. Love the strafing and The Shield mechanics you choose as well as the music. Even the enemies death cries gives me the nostalgic itch. Extremely good job keep it up i will be here for the 10 levels that Halo original had so hopefully you make them all. Will also keep an eye on any other projects you make since you are definitely skilled. Maybe you bring life back into the Gameboy Color.

not as good as the 2600 version.

A bit of a bug for Leve 2, if you go back to the cell where you already rescued the marines, they'll be there again. At least this happened to me with the marines that are "behind the rocks" area.
