Fantastic project! One idea: have you thought of integrating melee when the Master Chief is in touch with or very close to an enemy? For instance, when the bounding boxes of MC and the enemy collide or are within a fixed proximity, you could activate a melee animation and inflict serious damage to the enemy, without needing a separate key for it.

I tried really hard to add melee. I had it working well with a double-tap of any d-pad direction, but the engine's limit of 5 unique projectiles per scene locked me out of doing that sadly. I may come back to it again and give it another go, but I'd really like to work on the next level and get some new content out there!

BTW, there is a cool update to the first two levels coming in a few days.

Thanks for your amazing efforts and looking forward for the release! My suggestion is that you don't make any different key combination. Simply, when any enemy is very close to Master Chief, you automatically activate melee instead of shooting and you show a different animation from shooting, while also inflicting a significant (fixed or proportional to their HP) amount of damage to enemies. Given the projectile limit, if you cannot show a melee animation, how about pushing the enemies a little bit back, while enabling their damage animation and sound, WITHOUT activating a fire animation? This way, you need no additional keys, no additional animation, and you imitate it by response of the enemies. If you can add a bump sound as well, you are set!

I do have it figured out (and implemented in a test scene) without an animation, but I wasn't satisfied with the lack of player feedback. Thanks for your inputs!

Is there a way to make two movesets. One accessed with a and b aa used now and two others that work by holding select or start. Example pressing b would shoot normally and a normally interacts, but now if you hold start, and press A now u it does a melee attack. If you hold select and press A now that Reloads same with b so u have access to 6 buttons now

Really fun playing through this, excited for more. After playing this I downloaded gb studio and have been messing around with it.

I am looking to make a physical cartridge copy of this. Is there anyone that has made a cartridge label for this game? Thank you!

Yes, I have. Message me on Reddit at u/mikemill, and I'll send you the file. Then, you can find several sellers on Etsy who will turn it into a custom cartridge label for you.

Awesome. Thank you so much! I sent you a message!

Hmm, nothing came through from you yet.

Are you still adding to this game? It's incredible!

yeah man, there’s a new update launching in a week or so with improved graphics, a Link’s Awakening style HUD and reloading mechanic. After that, I’m starting on Truth and Reconciliation!

WOOOOO!!!

Can't wait!!!

It's not bad, but it feels a bit slow almost resembling an RPG. Would be better if the gameplay were more similar to Daikatana for the Game Boy

thanks for the feedback. It’s always appreciated. Do you think simply faster movement would be better? I haven’t played daikatana

I need this on cartridge!

You can easily make one! I did, but I'm not selling them.

I have reviewed

I did a speedrun of the 1st level in your game! It's very fun! It took me 6:07 but i'm sure i can do better haha! I loved your game

i want this as an actual rom

It is one! The downloads are right above the comments section. It's completely free.

A Halo demake? Amazing. Are there any ways I might be able to contribute? It could be a ton of fun to help work on this.

What are you trying to contribute? My only real deficit is sound. I have crunched a lot of the .wav files from the actual game, but the plasma weapons don't sound great. I'd also like more varied music. Other than that, playtesting would be nice, too!

(+1)

Happy to try and help with either! While I don’t have formal musical training, I’ve been playing and recording music for 15+ years (guitars and synths, primarily heavier music). I can figure out just about any DAW and have been working in Reaper for a little over 2 years, but I’m most experienced using Logic Pro (10+ years). Looking at the docs at https://www.gbstudio.dev/docs/assets/sound-effects/, it seems straightforward (which != ‘easy’) to implement sounds.

Sweet my Discord is SofaSwordsman#5216 if you want to DM me there. The music in my game is the only thing I haven't made myself so I could really use some help! The main theme playing on repeat does get a little old...

Awesome, just sent a request. Sorry for the delay, I got a bit tied up this week.

This is stupid in the best way possible: Completely full of unrestrained passion. This is a treasure.

Thank you so much for this complement, Spartan.

You know what? Screw it!

*Devolves your Combat*

(+2)

i look forward to supporting the creator of this or donating to a charity of the devs choosings. The first two levels are incredible and I can't wait for the roll out more. - Works great on modded GBA with EZ-flash cart and SimpleDE v1.3 firmware

you should do halo reach next

Made this for the game, feel free to use it!

Truth & Reconciliation when? Cuz shit was fire

OMG!! I’m Absolutely in love with this! Not all heroes wear Mjolnir Armor, some make bada$$ stuff like this!! There are 3 things that shouldn’t be as insanely good as they are….. PB&J sandwiches, pure Colombian BamBam, and this masterpiece 10/10

This game is crazy good! There are some funny bugs, but the way how it is implemented is nice. Yeah I know gameplay is simpler than in original game, but it's very impressive how well it's imported for GBA!

This is fantastic. Very satisfying. Great work and thank you. You revived my love of the halo franchise but I can't wait for more of this. 10/10

9 y/o Me: Mom, can I get Halo: Combat Evolved?

Mom: We already Have That game at Home

This is badass, thank you for this!

Amazing

I FOUND A BUG if youre shooting the rifle and swap to the magnum you get a full auto magnum

That is kind of awesome, but I have fixed it in a big update that's coming out soon.

This is so incredible! When I reached Halo and the Marine said the cavalry has arrived and it really took me back. "This cave is not a natural formation" really cracked me up!

Well done!

When will the full game be released?

Hi this is SBplankton from SBplankton.

Halo on GBC are... Just gbc, but I have no outstanding toward these fine halo-fans and so am i, so i'll be able to this game describe opinions to You.

* The Music Main-menu begin the loop end over loop

* The energy Shield have No animation.

* There No weapon & ammo sign the top-left screen

* And The most at all, did nintendo, bungie (oh though No longer being with it). & 343 Industries really love this Gameboy or gameboy color.

My options, the gameplay feel like 18-20 min long and few of 10 mission on the level skip, cut and some easy, normal, hard and legendary.

If you don't believe me, ask him. (By him, I means myself). This long comment is just a Lucky day.

Love supporting stuff like this, great job.

Not sure where to post bugs but player and enemy landed in the same tile at the same time and can no longer move player.

(+1)

It wont let me select any of the options on the home screen, when I press ENTER on any of the options nothing happens?

This is awesome! so keen for the rest of the development. Amazing work, mate!

This is fantastic, so true to the original! I’d be happy to offer resources or support to see level 3! I love how you’ve basically thought of everything devolved to a gbc level. The mechanics in level too were amazing! I was genuinely blown away! Great work so far and thank you for your efforts and the time taken!

We have Atari 26000, Nintendo 8bit... We just need a 16 bit demake and we will have a complete set.

Im gonna need someone to make a label for my cart now lol

(+1)

Absolutely amazing game, excited to play more levels when they are out :) are you planning to add harder difficulties at any point? Would love an excuse to replay the levels already out

(+1)

Love the work you're doing, if you need any help with sprites/art work let me know I can lend my hand. Cheers!

(1 edit) (+1)

Hey Sofa. How can we support you?? I know there's a few other souls out there that would love to support the continuation of this

(+1)

I second this!

this is one of the coolest projects I’ve seen in a long time. Is there a plan to complete the whole game? Great work, hopefully this opens the door for other projects of this caliber

Really wonderful, quite well done. The new Warthog and sniping game play is a really clever way to evoke the moments of the original while translating them to GBC in a way that is actually fun. Those jumps over the river are iconic. Great work!!

OMG <3

Heroes NEVER DIE!!

I hope you add the trigger buttons of the game boy eventually so we could potentially have grenades be the left trigger and A or B be a gun bash or there's other cool mechanics you could add doing that.

If you add a bash the simplest way would probably be putting a sprite animation over chief corresponding with his direction that shows a little arm movement with a slash like animation would be pretty cool

(+2)

Thanks for playing! I did want to add a melee, and it would be easy to implement, but there just aren't enough buttons. The Game Boy Color doesn't have trigger buttons, so I can't map to those. Additionally, while each mechanic is easy to implement in a vacuum, its adding everything together cumulatively that can have an impact on performance. I had to think critically about which mechanics to cut in order to preserve smooth gameplay within the limits of the GBC.

I think the project is pretty cool and I hope you are getting a lot of love from the community! You're right the game boy color does not have enough buttons, but maybe this project has potential being turned into gba advanced game one day and be able to handle more ideas you get. But I'm just a fan who doesn't know how that coding works tbh
